STUDIO COURSES

Learn printmaking in my studio

Autumn Courses 2023

Here is the current programme of courses for October and November. I hope you will find something to inspirre you here!

The studio is currently in the house temporarily, in a light room with French doors to the garden. It is a bit smaller than the original studio, hence there’s just a small group of 3 students to make sure everybody has plenty of space.

Courses tend to fill up quickly, please sign up to my email list for priority info about new courses, as this is the best way to reserve your place. I am open to requests as well; just gather 3 people together and email me to discuss what you would like to do and when, and we’ll get it in the diary. I have a list of good places to stay locally if you need overnight accommodation, just let me know and I’ll send it to you.

arranging leaves on a mono printing plate

Mono printing from nature

Sunday 1st Oct 2023, 10.00am – 4.00pm

This is a chance to spend a creative day celebrating the natural world, and exploring colour and form. Mono printing is direct and immediate, each print is unique and you will make quite a few on this one-day course. Using moss, seaweed, leaves, feathers, seeds and grasses, this is a lovely course for gardeners and naturalists as well as printmakers. Whether you are a complete beginner or have lots of printmaking experience, you will end the day with a bundle of your own unique prints, and the knowledge of how to use this magical printing process in your future creative work.

student's viscosity mono-print in red, blue and black

Viscosity mono printing

Sat 7th Oct 2023, 10.00am – 4.00pm

The viscosity method produces infinite variations on multi coloured prints. This day is a freewheeling adventure into the world of colour. Mono printing is a great way into understanding how the viscosity method works; the handout explains it, but this doesn’t always explain the surprising results!
Both viscosity and mono printing combine well with many other techniques, so you will leave the course with lots of new ideas for extending your work.

colourful carborundum print

Exploring carborundum printmaking

Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th Oct 2023, 10.00 – 4.00

This free flowing and painterly technique can be combined with other methods, eg drypoint, or used by itself. Carborundum grit holds ink and produces richly coloured and textured prints. We will experiment with carborundum in different forms (powder, paint, paper) and create a series of layered plates to overprint in various combinations.

We will use the kitchen and wc in the house.

Out side space
French doors open onto garden where there is room to work outside when the weather is sunny.

What time do courses start and finish?

Courses run from 10.00am till 4.pm.
If you are booking a course for a small group we can arrange times to suit you.

Is it the right level for me?

All courses are suitable for both beginners and those with some experience.

You don’t need to be able to draw, or have any particular art experience. In fact several students have come along to accompany a ‘creative’ friend or partner and discovered that they are really quite creative themselves.

If you already have experience of printmaking, the methods and techniques you learn on these short courses will add to your practice, and inspire new avenues of creativity. If you are a beginner I hope the courses will get you hooked on printmaking!

You don’t need to prepare anything before the course, we get all our ideas as we go. However if you want to bring a sketchbook or something you are already working on that is great.

What if I can’t make a course I have booked?

I hope the courses will all go ahead but if for any reason one doesn’t run we will do our best to arrange an alternative date. If this is not possible you can choose to have a credit towards another course, or a refund of the whole amount paid.

If you need to cancel and let me know at least month before the course I will refund your full fee minus 10% to cover admin costs. If your cancellation is less than a month before the course, you can choose to have a full credit against a future course, or persuade a friend to come in your place.

Can I arrange extra dates?

Yes. If you can’t make any of the programmed dates, just gather a group of 3 or 4 people together and we can fix a date that suits. Choose from any of the advertised courses or we can devise one especially for your particular group.
