Complete viscosity printing

A fascinating technique using layers of different coloured inks which don’t mix on the plate, enabling you to print multiple colours in one go. An unpredictable and ‘magic’ technique with an optional scientific explanation!Viscosity inking is one of those techniques that you have to actually do to understand it, watching or reading about it doesn’t always make sense. The course is structured to give you a basic understanding of the principles of viscosity printing, and then an opportunity to practice and experiment with it.

Day 1
A day of mono printing, which in terms of viscosity inking is a 2D process and a good place to start. Mono prints are speedy and creative, and a lovely way to feel confident with colour as you develop an understanding of the viscosity process.

Day 2
Viscosity printing with collagraphs; working with textured plates takes the work into 3D. We will make simple collagraph plates and experiment with layering different colours on the same plate.

You can apply the principles of viscosity inking to most printing plates, so it works with etchings and lino cuts as well as mono prints. The learning on this course will affect the way you print in future, making your prints more subtle, colourful and full of depth.

Both these techniques combine well with many other forms of printmaking, so you will leave the course with lots of new ideas for extending your work.

Continue printing and developing your skill with viscosity inking.

Frequently people don’t want to stop, so this year I am offering the option of a follow-on extra day printing in the studio. This means that anyone who’s done the first two days can continue exploring the process, with full access to all the materials and support from me as needed.
